Healthy, Soft & Static Free with Felted Wool Dryer Balls

carpet cleaning nyJust because dryer sheets and liquid fabric softeners leave your clothes smelling sweet and feeling soft, does not mean they are good for you.

Dryer sheets and fabric softeners actually list a larger number of toxic and harmful chemicals. These chemicals seep into your body through the clothes you wear and the sheets and blankets with which you sleep.

Wool dryer balls offer you a soft, fresh, and static free alternative to the chemicals in dryer sheets and fabric softeners.

Wool increases and maintains the humidity level inside your dryer by absorbing the moisture then redistributing it into the dryer. The wool balls reduce dry time of your clean items and leave you with the same results as the chemical alternatives (aside from the scent, but we can fix that).

Make your own wool dryer balls by following these steps:

First, gather your materials. You’ll need two or three yards of wool roving or wool yard (more or less depending on how many dryer balls you want to make), pantyhose, and a pair of scissors.

Then roll your yarn or roving into a small but tightly wound ball, about the size of a tennis ball.

Now, cut the top of the panty hose off of your pair and keep the legs. Working one at a time, stuff your wool balls into the leg of pantyhose and tie a knot between each ball. When finished, your pantyhose should look more like the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Toss your dry ball caterpillar into the washing machine and wash on the hottest water setting possible. Once washed, pop the caterpillar into the dryer until completely dry. You can repeat this step another time to strengthen the felting if you would like.

Cut your wool dryer balls free and toss them into your dryer the next time and every time you do laundry (they last for five years). For an all-natural scent for your laundry, fill half a spray bottle full of water and add ten drops of your favorite essential oil. Spray freshly washed wet clothes with ten to 15 sprays of your mist before starting dryer.
