How to Grow Your Own Pumpkin

Posted by on September 23rd, 2012

Pumpkin Patch | Guarantee Green BlogHeading out to the farm to pick pumpkins is a classic fall activity. It gets the family outdoors for some fresh air, and is a great way to teach children about how food is grown. Although most of those pumpkins are soon to be jack-o-lanterns, set one aside and use it to grow another pumpkin!

Cut the top off your pumpkin, just like you would for a jack-o-lantern, but make the opening a little wider. Instead of scooping out the seeds, leave everything in place and fill the pumpkin with soil. Leave the pumpkin just like this, uncovered and full of dirt, and soon a new pumpkin will start to sprout.

Pumpkins love sun and water, and grow quickly. A pumpkin vine will grow up to 30 feet or more, but if you’re serious about growing pumpkins you’ll have to start in the Spring. Pumpkins hate cold weather.

There are many different types of pumpkins, and if you decide to grow them for eating then make sure you choose one that’s known for it’s flavor. Jack-o-lantern pumpkins are hardy, and great for carving, but aren’t so tasty.

Even though it’s too late to start a pumpkin patch, growing your own pumpkin in a pumpkin is a super fun fall activity and a great way to teach children about how food grows.
