Waste Free Party Planning Tips

Posted by on May 8th, 2012

The season for backyard barbecues and summer pool parties is almost here. Parties are a lot of fun, but they also create a lot of waste with leftover decorations, disposable cups and plates and food that all gets tossed in the garbage. If you want to have an environmentally friendly party, just follow these simple waste free party planning tips.

Party PlanningIf you have to use disposable plates and silverware, use biodegradable. Many companies now make paper cups and plates out of recycled or biodegradable materials, and silverware from corn fiber that also biodegrades. That way you can have a quick clean up with no added harm to the environment.

Set up recycling places around your party for bottles and cans, that way guests won’t toss recyclable materials into the garbage. If you live in an area with limited capabilities for recycling, or you don’t want a ton of bottles and cans sitting around the house for a few weeks, check out where your local recycling centers are for an easy drop off.

Have guests RSVP, and make sure you serve the right amount of food. Making too much food sounds like fun, but it also creates a lot of waste. If you are making a lot of food, send leftovers home with guests.

If you are a big party thrower, get decorations that can be used again and again.

With these simple waste free party planning tips, you can have a big party with a small impact on the environment!
